Woman shoots, kills man during alleged sexual assault at Cumberland home: police
Cumberland police officials said officers were called around 7 p.m. Sunday to the 11300 block of Dunshire Drive for an ongoing disturbance. Upon arrival at a home off of E. 10th Street, they found a woman standing outside who said she had been attacked.
The woman told officers that she fired a shot in self-defense and that a man was injured inside the home. Officers went inside, found a man suffering from a gunshot wound and took him to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition.
Despite doctors attempting lifesaving surgery, the man did not survive his injury and was pronounced dead at the hospital on Sunday night. On Monday, the Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 30-year-old Malik Phelixis Robinson.
Police said the woman was fully cooperative with investigators, who gathered several pieces of evidence and interviewed multiple witnesses.
Investigators preliminarily believe that Robinson and the woman knew each other and that he had been invited into the home. Police say that at some point, Robinson made “several unwanted sexual advances” toward the woman as she tried to distance herself from him.
Cumberland police said Robinson then followed the woman into another room and “a sexual assault began to take place.” The woman told police that she was soon able to grab her nearby gun and fire one shot in self-defense, striking and killing Robinson.
The woman was released from police custody after an interview and taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries she sustained during the attack. Police said investigators found evidence inside the home that “is consistent with the telling of events by the woman.”
CMPD said its investigation into the shooting is ongoing and that the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified. Anyone with information on the attack or shooting is being asked to call 911 or CMPD at (317) 894-3525.
