Giants manager Bob Melvin dismissed following disappointing season
The Menlo Park-native had previously played for the Giants and as manager of the Athletics, led the Giant’s then-cross Bay rivals to six playoff appearances. However, under Melvin, the Giants went 80-82 last season and 81-81 this season, missing out on the post-season.
Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey will now be tasked with picking a new manager for the team.
“After meeting with ownership, I met with Bob today to inform him of my decision,” Poesy said Monday. “On behalf of the organization, I want to express my appreciation to Bob for his dedication, professionalism, and class. I wish him the best.”
Posey called the last couple of months under Melvin, “disappointing and frustrating.”
“We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward,” Posey said.
Melvin, 63, had a year remaining on his contract, according to MLB.com.
