Just after 9 a.m., CHP officers were dispatched to Shaw and Floyd Avenues, east of the community of Biola, for a report of a collision.
They arrived to find a Toyota Tacoma and a Dodge Dart that had crashed head-on.
Due to the impact of the damage to both vehicles, North Central Fire crews were called out to assist by using the Jaws of Life to get to the drivers before they could be extricated.
Both drivers were determined to have major injuries.
Investigators said neither alcohol nor drugs factored into this collision, but distracted driving is a possible factor.
They also said both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and that simple act likely saved their lives.
The CHP calls the crash “horrific” and reminds motorists to keep their eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and mind on driving. It says, “Even a few seconds of distraction can change everything.”
