At around 6 a.m., CHP officers were made aware of a report of an unresponsive adult man on Highway 59 at Washington Road in an unincorporated area of Merced County.
The preliminary investigation determined that the man was driving a 1998 Toyota Corolla on Washington Road, traveling westbound at an unknown speed, and approaching the stop sign at Highway 59.
At the same time, CHP said a man was driving a semi-truck on the State Route northbound, at approximately 55 mph, approaching the intersection.
For unknown reasons, CHP said that the man driving the Corolla entered the intersection after he failed to stop for the stop sign. He entered the path of the semi-truck. The semi-truck collided with the left side of the Corolla.
Upon arrival, medical and emergency personnel determined that the man had died due to his injuries. Officials have not released the identity of the man who died.
This crash remains under investigation.
