COALVILLE, Utah (
ABC4) — An explosive confrontation between neighbors was captured on camera in Coalville, September 20, that resulted in a misdemeanor assault charge and a temporary restraining order.
The heated dispute was allegedly over a mayoral campaign sign — “A political sign, Lynn Wood, she’s running for mayor,” Coalville resident Troy Gonzalez said. He has a sign that says “Lynn Wood for Mayor” placed in his front yard.
In an exclusive interview with ABC4 News, Gonzalez, 45, claimed that his neighbors Denise Smith and her husband Sheldon, who up until earlier this year served as Coalville’s city attorney for more than 25 years, asked Gonzalez if they could place a different mayoral candidate’s sign next to Wood’s sign, on Gonzalez’s lawn.
Gonzalez declined.
According to Gonzalez, the first request was on Friday, September 19, when Denise asked him if that would be possible.
“I said oh no … she said, ‘oh, well, I hate that b—- and punched her hand’ and I was like, ‘okay’, and I just kind of left it alone,” Gonzalez claimed.
Gonzalez provided ABC4 News several videos he recorded on his cellphone, one of which showed Sheldon in front of Gonzalez’s home requesting to place the sign on Gonzalez’s lawn, some time after Denise did that day.
A portion of the video shows Sheldon asking about the sign:
Sheldon: “Are you willing to take a sign up from her competitor?”
Gonzalez: “Your wife just stopped by.”
Sheldon: “Oh she asked okay.”
Gonzalez: “Yeah, she was saying that she really didn’t care for her too much.”
Sheldon: “Oh I hate Lynn. She’s a b—-”
Later in the video, Sheldon is heard saying “just my opinion, she is one of the biggest b—— I’ve ever met.”
Towards the end of the video, Sheldon is heard asking “so you’re telling me no on the other sign?”
Gonzalez responds “yeah, no I’d rather not.”
That same day, video shows Sheldon returning to Gonzalez’s home — this time with an apology.
Sheldon: “hey, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have gone off on you like that,” Sheldon is heard saying.
Gonzalez: “yeah, I mean both you and your wife did. That was pretty wild.”
Later in the video, Sheldon asks if Gonzalez would forgive him.
Sheldon: “So do you forgive me for approaching you that way?”
Gonzalez: “Yeah, I mean that was very odd.”
Sheldon: “I just had enough of that lady and when I, every time I go past that, I mean she strategically put that there so that I would see it every time I go by.”
Towards the end of this particular video, Shannon apologizes once more, and both wish each other a good day.
Less than 24 hours later, the dispute is on again and this time, a separate video provided by Gonzalez shows an explosive altercation between Gonzalez and the Smiths.
Gonzalez told ABC4 News “They say … three times forgive, fourth time … it’s on.”
The video, which Gonzalez recorded in the morning hours of September 20, shows Sheldon somewhere near Gonzalez’s front yard.
The two are heard arguing about the use of city property near Gonzalez’s home, which Gonzalez claims Sheldon brought up, following Gonzalez’s rejection of posting a different mayoral candidates sign on his lawn, next to Wood’s sign.
In the September 20 video, Gonzalez then shouts “I’ve documented everything including your threats, so F— off and take a hike b—-.
Moments later, the video shows Denise entering the video’s frame.
Denise is heard screaming “This son of a b—- isn’t worth it,” as she walks around a vehicle and approached Sheldon and Gonzalez who were standing near one another, as seen in the video.
After an exchange of several back-and-forth insults, a video filmed from a wider angle, shows Denise making some kind of motion with her hand while standing near Sheldon and Gonzalez.
After that moment, Gonzalez is heard shouting “you just hit me. You assaulted me.”
Simultaneously, Sheldon is heard saying “she didn’t hit you.”
The parties would continue to exchange several more insults with each other and Denise is heard denying that she hit Gonzalez.
In one portion of the video, Sheldon says “Lynn’s a f—— b—–.
In another portion of the video, Denise is heard screaming “I’ll spread it all around about you and I have more friends in this community than you or that b—-.
According to Summit County Justice Court records, a misdemeanor assault charge was filed against Denise on September 23.
Records also show that Gonzalez is the petitioner of a temporary civil stalking injunction and that Denise is the respondent.
The injunction document shows a “findings” section that states “The court has reviewed the Petitioner’s Request for Stalking Injunction, find there is a reason to believe it has jurisdiction over the parties and this case, that stalking has occurred, and that the Respondent is the stalker.”
