Wife of Weezer bassist who allegedly shot at police avoids jail time
A judge granted Jillian Lauren Shriner, 52, a mental health reprieve instead of jail time, with the caveat that she must have quarterly progress reports for the next two years and not consume alcohol or any illegal drugs.
“Any violation reported to the court may result in potential termination of the diversion. If she successfully completes the conditions of the diversion, the case will be dismissed by the court,” a spokesperson for the D.A.’s Office said.
Jillian Shriner, who is married to Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was charged with two felony counts for allegedly firing at Los Angeles Police Department officers who were in pursuit of suspects involved in a hit-and-run.
Jillian Shriner, who publishes her work under the last name Lauren, had no connection with that crime, but allegedly exited her home armed with a 9 mm handgun and fired in the direction of officers. Police returned fire and struck her and took her into custody.
Police told KTLA that she was given multiple commands to drop the weapon before officers fired, hitting her in the shoulder before she ran back inside the residence. Her wounds were not considered life-threatening.
The bizarre case stemmed from an April hit-and-run crash on the 134 Freeway in which three men involved in a crash abandoned the vehicle and fled into a residential neighborhood. One of the men stripped down to his underwear, jumped into a backyard pool and even watered a home’s plants in an apparent attempt to blend in.
Police searched the neighborhood, which led to the confrontation with Jillian Shriner and the eventual arrest of one of the suspects.
Jillian Shriner was originally booked for attempted murder but was ultimately charged with assault with a semiautomatic firearm and willfully firing it in a negligent way.
Jillian Shriner has been married to Scott Shriner since 2005, and they have two sons together. She’s previously been named a New York Times bestseller for the books “Everything You Ever Wanted” and “Some Girls: My Life in a Harem,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
Scott Shriner has recorded 12 studio albums since joining Weezer in 2001. The band performed at Coachella only days after the shooting.
