WFAE, Charlotte’s NPR station, to leave Uptown studio amid budget challenges

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — WFAE, Charlotte’s NPR station, says it will leave its uptown studio in spring 2026 due to budget cuts.

The station has been operating out of the historic Philip Carey Building near First Ward Park since 2022, but will move operations back to its University City location.

According to WFAE, the decision is part of a larger effort to close a nearly $1 million funding gap caused by cuts in federal support and a drop in corporate sponsorships.

WFAE President & CEO Ju-Don Marshall called the move a tough but necessary step.

“The revenue losses we are experiencing require that we reevaluate our priorities, including having a permanent uptown location, to ensure that WFAE’s ability to serve the Charlotte region remains strong,” Marshall said in a released statement.

While the physical space will close, WFAE plans to keep partnering with local organizations, like the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and UNC Charlotte, to keep its programming visible.
