'We made it': 2100 South in Sugarhouse reimagined, reconstruction wraps up
“This is not an old roadway, but an ancient piece of community utility too,” Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall noted. “To the public, all they know that 2100 S was inconvenient for a year and a half. To the business owners, it more than inconvenient. It was painful. But what we had to accomplish was more than a repave and a restriping. It was building safer pedestrian infrastructure, better access to transit and better access to our businesses.”
Sugar House businesses and residents are marking the completion of the 2100 South reconstruction, a major project executed under the 2018 Funding Our Future initiative by Salt Lake City. It was a $87 million voter-approved bond for street reconstruction along with yearly sales tax revenue for increased street maintenance. The first bond projects began construction in 2020.
“It was because of this neighborhood that I moved to Salt Lake City as a teenager,” Mendenhall continued. “When you walk together and share public transport, that builds community and honestly, that’s what builds democracy.”
The construction has proved difficult for many businesses who have seen a drop in traffic since construction began.
The project has upgraded the road to better accommodate vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. The Department of Public Utilities has also made upgrades to water and sewer lines that had become outdated.
Nearly 15 businesses were impacted due the construction but city officials are encouraging the community to support local businesses in the area.
“Sugarhouse is where we build community. Thank you for getting through this with us,” Mendenhall concluded.
