Two officers responded to the area and spoke with Jose Hernandez, 47. SLCPD shared that Hernandez was declined medical treatment and was not answering the officer’s questions.
One officer is seen displaying a taser before bringing out his firearm.
Law enforcement reported that Hernandez then began to put landscaping rocks into his hooded sweatshirt pouch and, despite commands, began to walk away.

Hernandez then started to run across 300 West. As he got to the corner of 2100 South 300 West, SLCPD said that he turned and threw a rock at an officer. The officer fired at least one round hitting Hernandez.
Hernandez was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD), they received a call regarding an urgent assault shortly after 9 a.m. near 2100 South and 300 West.
Brandon Christiansen, a deputy chief with the Salt Lake City Police Department, told ABC4 that officers rushed to the area encountered a man who was “armed with a rock.”
During the encounter, Christiansen said the man through the rock at officers and an officer opened fire. The man was transported to a nearby hospital and died either on the way there or when he got to the hospital.
An officer was injured during the incident with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer is currently being treated at the hospital.
ABC4 asked SLCPD if they can confirm whether the man who an officer shot was identified as the suspect related to the assault call — police say that’s under investigation.
The police department was also unable to confirm whether they have identified a victim in the alleged reported assault.
ABC4 spoke to several individuals in the area, including a man on scene who claimed to be a witness to the incident. He says that the man with the rock was experiencing a medical emergency, before officers arrived on scene.
In response to that claim, SLCPD stated that the officers were responding specifically to an urgent assault call and that dispatch did not receive any calls regarding a medical emergency.
The incident is currently under investigation. Christiansen told ABC4 that the West Jordan Police Department will be conducting the investigation.
