On Sept. 27 at 12 p.m., the City of Garland will unveil its newest landmark: The Big Hat, a 20-foot-wide, Texas-sized installation honoring the city’s title as the Cowboy Hat Capital of Texas. The installation will now be the biggest hat in Texas.
Designed and fabricated by Mello Designs and Signs, the oversized sculpture will sit in the heart of Garland’s Downtown Square, creating a whimsical, Instagram-worthy photo stop that celebrates both community pride and Garland’s hat-making legacy.
Since 1938, Garland has been home to some of the world’s most iconic cowboy hat manufacturers, including Resistol and Stetson — brands worn by actors, presidents, and music legends alike. Today, that tradition continues with three active hat makers still producing in the city.
The official unveiling will include a Ribbon Cutting Salute, along with the opening of a companion exhibit, Hats Off to Garland, produced by Heritage Crossing and the Garland Landmark Society. The exhibit showcases artifacts, photos, and stories that highlight Garland’s historic role in shaping cowboy culture.
