Housing and energy top priorities for Rockford area economic development

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — State Democrats convened for a roundtable discussion in Rockford on Tuesday to explore strategies for business growth in the Stateline area.

The meeting was held at Fresco at the Gardens, at 318 Spring Creek Road, which is part of a statewide tour aimed at understanding how state resources can be best utilized to foster economic development. Key topics included housing and energy, which were highlighted as significant issues by Rep. Dave Vella (D-68th).

“It’s good to hear – see, this is how government works – we hear from the people in the trenches doing the work, and knowing that housing is such a big issue, knowing that energy is such a big issue, it’s something that we’re going to focus on, and we are focusing on, down in Springfield,” said Vella.

“One of the things I was happy to see was, number one, the participation was robust. Everyone’s working together in this region, and everyone wants to work to move not just Rockford, Winnebago County, Boone County, they all want to move Illinois forward,” said House Speaker Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch (D).

Vella noted that his district is experiencing positive trends with projects like the Hard Rock Casino Rockford and efforts to reopen the Belvidere Stellantis plant.

Welch emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation in advancing the region’s economic goals.

The fall veto session, scheduled for next month, will be a critical time for lawmakers to address energy issues across the state, despite the limited time available for passing legislation.
