Man dies more than a month after being hit by vehicle on west side

INDIANAPOLIS – A man died more than a month after being hit by a car on the west side of Indianapolis.

At 11:57 p.m. on Aug. 8, Indianapolis Metropolitan police were dispatched to the 4900 block of West Troy Avenue. They arrived to find a vehicle had struck 35-year-old Joshua Washburn.

IMPD said Washburn was walking in the road when the vehicle, which was headed eastbound, hit him.

Police found Washburn lying in the road. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition after suffering a severe head injury.

The driver cooperated with investigators at the scene and was taken for a blood draw, which is standard procedure in deadly crashes. Impairment was not believed to be a factor.

The driver told investigators she didn’t see Washburn in the road before she hit him. A second driver reported to police that he’d encountered Washburn a few minutes before the crash and swerved to avoid him.

According to the Marion County Coroner’s Office, Washburn died from his injuries at Eskenazi Hospital on Saturday, more than a month after the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.
