INDIANAPOLIS — An investigation is underway after at least two people were killed and five others were injured in a shooting on Indy’s northwest side on Sunday morning.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, just after 2 a.m., officers responded to the 6800 block of Shore Terrace on the report of shots fired.

IMPD said a total of six males and one female were shot in the incident. The two individuals who were shot and killed were adult males, police said.

Investigators say officers found five victims shot at the scene, three of whom were critically injured and subsequently transported to an area hospital. The other two adult males were pronounced dead on scene, according to police.

IMPD said a sixth shooting victim went to a local fire station for assistance. A seventh shooting victim walked into an area hospital. They were listed in “serious, but stable condition,” police said.

Investigators said the shooting happened outside in a parking lot. At least one person of interest was detained.

“This is certainly heartbreaking, obviously, you know, we’ve had a busy night, our metro officers have been extremely busy, and we’re doing everything that we can to hold those accountable responsible.” IMPD Sergeant William Young said. “It’s also our responsibility as adults to make sure that we act as adults and do everything that we can to keep ourselves safe.”

FOX59/CBS4 spoke to a man who said he witnessed the shooting. He said everything was calm until it wasn’t.

“I woke up from a nap, and I noticed the scene around me and it was normal,” Perry Hilliard said. “Everyone was walking around, everyone was having a good time, drinking, socializing, and then out of nowhere, rapid gunfire … nonstop.”

Hilliard said he stayed in his car until the shooting stopped. When he got out, he saw families screaming, two people dead and another fighting for their life.

He said the last time he remembers something like this happening was years ago.

“Different bar, different name and maybe a different crowd,” Hilliard said. “Ever since the change, it’s been quieter, less drama, less trouble. But yeah, this doesn’t happen often.”

Of the 120 homicides in Marion County this year, more than a quarter, 34, have happened between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m., when statistically fewer people could be expected to be out and moving around.

Family members of the victims responded immediately to the crime scene.

“Sad to say I did know one person,” said Hillard. “I do feel sorry for his family because he was a good guy. He wasn’t a rowdy person, he wasn’t angry or anything. Very chill, he was positive, friendly.”

Indianapolis’ downtown bar district along South Meridian Street has been the site of several early morning shootings this year.
