Felony charges filed against suspect injured in West Side police shooting
Officers say 55-year-old Antonio Wallace, a South Austin resident, has been charged with three felony counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer and one felony count of possession of a weapon as a felon.
According to police, the charges stem from an incident that unfolded around 11 p.m. Wednesday, in the 5200 block of West Madison Street, in Austin.
It all began after officers in the area spotted Wallace, who was allegedly carrying a large knife while “advancing toward civilians.”
Officers said they instructed Wallace to drop the weapon, but he allegedly continued walking toward officer. The officers deployed their tasers, but they proved ineffective.
Police said as Wallace allegedly continued to make his way toward the officers, one of them opened fire, eventually striking him.
Following the shooting, the officers on the scene quickly began rendering aid to Wallace, who was later taken to the hospital in serious condition.
On Friday, authorities announced charges against Wallace, but did not provide an update on his condition.
Police did not provide a booking photo for Wallace, who is set to appear in court for a detention hearing on Saturday.
