CCL holder shoots, kills man trying to break into West Side apartment

CHICAGO (WGN) – A man was shot and killed by a concealed carry license holder while trying to break into a West Side apartment Saturday morning, according to Chicago police.

Sources close to the investigation said a 33-year-old man was banging on the back door of an apartment, threatening to kill a woman and her children inside. The resident called police and a relative, a 28-year-old woman, who was able to get there quickly.

Police said the incident happened in the 3400 block of West Monroe Street just before 7 a.m. Saturday in East Garfield Park.

The man allegedly continued to try to get into the home and broke a bedroom window in the process, sources told WGN-TV. The 28-year-old woman, who was now inside, fired toward the man on the back porch, hitting him multiple times.

According to police, the attempted break-in suspect was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The CCL holder was taken to Area Four for questioning, and no charges have been announced.

Police said the incident appears to be domestic-related.

“This is like a shock to be honest,” said neighbor Emonie. “I honestly didn’t hear anything, that’s so crazy.”

Emonie said she only learned about the shooting hours later.

“I can only imagine how her kids were feeling and everything when this was going on. This is really scary,” said Emonie.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has not publicly released the name of the man, which WGN-TV has confirmed through sources, but is not sharing until officials do so.

According to arrest records, the 33-year-old has been arrested at least 64 times in Chicago and has at 11 convictions stemming from some of those cases.

Court and arrests records confirm the man has been convicted in multiple domestic violence cases on charges that include violating of an order of protection and domestic battery, along with other cases involving aggravated battery on a peace officer, and criminal trespass.

According to court records, the man was arrested for domestic battery and criminal damage to property at the same address in August. He was released from custody in late August, weeks before the deadly shooting.
