Active skies for the last few days of Summer

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Friday, Utah! Unsettled weather is working its way through the Beehive State from the south to the north. A low-pressure system is ushering in Pacific moisture through the southwest and into the Great Basin. Northern Utah will see mostly cloudy skies, but a dry layer could keep northern valleys precipitation-free, although an evening shower or thunderstorm could still be in the cards. Southern Utah has already seen overnight showers which should calm down somewhat through the late morning and afternoon, but it won’t let up completely. For most of southern Utah, the heaviest rain will be in the early morning, but isolated showers and thunderstorms will hold into the afternoon through southern and central Utah.

With showers in southern Utah comes the threat of flash flooding. Nearly all of the state and national parks in southern Utah are under a “Possible” threat for flash flooding, so flash flooding won’t be widespread, but it’ll be worth keeping your eyes to the skies. If you must get out to an outdoor recreation area, Arches, The Swell, and Canyonlands are your best bet as they are not very likely to see heavy rain.

Temperatures in the south will be about five degrees cooler than yesterday with daytime highs in the 70s for most and mid to upper 80s for the warmer spots. Northern Utah’s temperatures will be pretty similar to yesterday’s, topping out in the upper 70s to low 80s.

By Saturday the moisture surges further north. Saturday will feature isolated showers and thunderstorms to most of the state. The best chance for showers and thunderstorms will be in northern Utah, including the Wasatch Front, but central Utah and mountainous regions should see a few showers as well. Southern Utah will begin drying out Saturday, but lingering moisture will spell a few more showers here and there. Northern Utah will join the south in cooler temps with highs dropping to the mid and upper 70s this weekend.

We close out the weekend with lingering showers in northern Utah. The highest precipitation potential will be on the north end of the Wasatch Front, Cache Valley, and the northern Mountains. While showers will likely still be present, they shouldn’t be as widespread as Saturday.
