Sugar House Eatery faces $3,000 in damages after break-in

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A popular sugar house restaurant is recovering after a break-in over the weekend, which caused thousands of dollars in damage.

Empanada Co. is a small, family-owned business in Sugar House. They are trying to stay positive after a recent break-in over the weekend. Adam Farr, co-owner of Empanada Co., took to social media to share what happened with their customers.

“I walked up to the door and saw glass everywhere, and it didn’t register at first, then I could tell someone had kicked the door in, and I remember thinking that’s not ideal,” Farr said.

Salt Lake police confirmed Empanada Co. in Sugar House was robbed over the weekend, with over $3,000 worth of damage and $300 stolen from the cash register. Farr added, “I looked through three glass doors and the cash register had been yanked out of its place and saw the computer screen had been knocked down.”

Florencia Farr, co-owner of Empanada Co., said their security and alarm systems failed to activate, but added that the alarm company came to fix their alarm system, saying it was a motion sensor malfunction.

“I’m sad. You work so hard to get your own business and then for someone to come and break in,” Florencia said. Empanada Co. has only been open for ten months, bringing authentic Argentinian flavors to Utah.

“We have tons of different flavors, and we listen to customers’ ideas and feedback, and have tons of customers who are like You know what sounds really good this and that, and if I can get it and do it, I’m like, why not? ‘” Florencia said.

Florencia Farr grew up in Argentina and said empanadas were part of everyday life, something she felt was missing in Utah. She said, “When I moved to the U.S. 18 years ago, it was hard to find, and to me it was weird because I grew up with them all over the place.”

Now, the couple is working to pay for the repairs, but they are also focused on staying open and encouraging customers to keep supporting locally.

“If anyone is watching or knows, who did it, bring them in and let’s sit down and see how we can help you and have a meal,” Farr said.
