According to a news release from the Shelbyville Police Department, officers responded to a home on Hale Road at around 10:46 p.m. Wednesday on a report of an unresponsive child.
When officers arrived, the release said they were met outside by a woman, later identified as Sophie Igou, who was beside her 22-month-old child. The child was reportedly laid out in the driveway.
“Officers immediately attempted to render aid, but it was quickly determined that the child was deceased,” the release said.
Investigators were then called to the scene to begin investigating the incident. The release said that an autopsy has been requested to determine the child’s cause of death.
Officials said that Igou has been preliminarily charged with one count of neglect of a dependent causing death, a Level 1 felony. The release said that additional charges are pending as of this story’s publication.
The Shelbyville Police Department is continuing to investigate the child’s death, the release said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at (317) 392-5106.
