Hundreds of crabs seized in San Francisco during poaching investigation

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KRON) — Hundreds of Dungeness crabs were saved from illegal poaching on Thronton Beach in San Francisco, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced today.

Officials with the CDFW initially responded to a CALTIP report of “about 30 people” illegally taking Dungeness crabs by hand during closed season on August 30 shortly after 9 p.m.. The large group turned out to be closer to 45 people under lights collecting the Dungeness crab, and when officers tried to intercept the group, some dropped their bags of crab and ran as they made their way back to a vehicle.

From 9:45 p.m. until 4 a.m., the CDFW issued 15 citations and seized the crabs stuffed in trash bags, backpacks, and grocery bags. According to the authorities, the majority of the crabs were undersized females which are illegal to take all year. Hundreds of Dungeness crab were saved and returned to their home in the ocean, according to the CDFW.

Report poaching by calling CalTIP at 1-888-334-2258 or using the Tip411 app.
