Police said Monday that detectives were looking for the victim’s granddaughter, 28-year-old Breante Thomas, in connection with the murder. She was charged with first- and second-degree murder, attempted first- and second-degree murder and related charges.
Just before 2 p.m. on Sept. 14, Prince George’s County officers responded to the 500 block of Bonhill Drive, where they found Helen Thomas, 81, who had been stabbed. She died at the scene.
Police said Thomas also stabbed a second family member, who remains hospitalized in stable condition.
According to authorities, Thomas was last seen leaving her grandmother’s home in a white 2012 Volkswagen Passat with the Maryland tags, 3FF3906.
Neighbors on Bonhill Dr tell DC News Now that Helen Thomas was kind and generous in welcoming people to the community.
“[She was a] pillar of the community. It’s sad,” said Thomas’ neighbor, Promise Hymes. “You don’t want it to happen to anyone, but definitely not someone who you know is sweet, kind, probably would give you the shirt off her back.”
“Anyone with any heart, a heart, compassion, you just feel it. I felt the loss when her husband passed. But now losing her, it hits a whole different level,” Hymes added.
Anyone with information about Thomas’s whereabouts is urged to contact 9-1-1. If you see her, police say you should not approach her.
