On Sept. 9, Petaluma police received a call at 11:21 a.m. regarding a woman who was seen “hitting and violently swinging a dog by its legs,” the department said. Responding officers spotted the suspect, identified as Irma Suarez Lopez, 48, of Petaluma, “squeezing the dog with violent force,” according to authorities.
Officers moved to intervene, but Suarez Lopez reportedly resisted arrest and refused to comply. She was eventually taken into custody and booked into the Sonoma County Jail for animal cruelty and resisting an officer.
The dog was placed into the care of animal control, where it was learned that it had been stolen from its original owner, Petaluma PD said.
“We are grateful to the community member who reported this activity, which allowed officers to intervene quickly and protect the animal,” police said.
