The incident occurred at 11:50 p.m. in the area of Keokuk and Cherry streets. PPD said they were alerted by a concerned community member.
“The reporting party stated that the subject had been seen entering private backyards and behaving suspiciously by walking around neighboring front yards, examining porches, and attempting to enter backyards,” said Petaluma police.
Petaluma police confirmed the suspect was quickly located nearby and later identified as Dan Coates. Police said Coates initially refused to obey officers’ commands but was eventually taken into custody.
Coates was booked at the Sonoma County Jail where he faces multiple charges, including prowling on private property, and resisting, delaying or obstructing a peace officer.
