At approximately 7:46 a.m., Berkeley PD Communications Center was notified by multiple callers that two people were hit by a vehicle that drove onto the sidewalk in the 2700 block of Belrose Avenue. Authorities were also informed that the driver drove away.
The arriving officers were informed en route to the scene that the suspect fled near Derby Street and abandoned the car near Emerson Elementary School in the 2800 block of Garber Street.
Berkeley PD said the suspect also attempted to carjack another individual before fleeing on foot. The suspect was detained shortly after.
A third victim, according to police, was located on Derby Street and was taken to a local hospital.
Berkeley PD said all of the victims were adults.
“We understand the fear and concern this incident has caused, especially during the busy morning commute near schools and residential neighborhoods,” said the department. “Thanks to the rapid response by officers, the suspect is now in custody, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.”
