BURKE COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of two men who were found shot after a house fire investigation, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

The two victims,  Michael Curtis Hallyburton,

63, and Joseph Kincaid Byrd Jr., 76, were killed after a house fire on August 31 on Swink Street in Morganton. Weeks later, officials said that the double-homicide investigation revealed that both men were shot to death.

On Monday, investigators arrested 51-year-old Michael James Moretz on two counts of felony murder in connection with the deaths of Hallyburton and Byrd.

Several dogs were found at the home and are being cared for by Burke County Animal Services. It is unclear if any animals were hurt in the fire.

Moretz is being held without bond, officials said. He has an initial court appearance scheduled for Thursday, September 18.
