Family mourns e-scooter rider killed by San Jose SAP Center

(KRON) — A family is mourning the death of a San Francisco woman who was killed while riding an electric scooter by the SAP Center in San Jose earlier this month.

Monica Ibarra, 52, and her scooter were hit by a stolen black Dodge Ram pickup truck on September 8 near the intersection of Santa Clara and Cahill streets, authorities said. San Jose police said the truck driver immediately fled from the scene and ditched the truck blocks away.

Police later found and arrested the suspected hit-and-run driver, 33-year-old Justin Perez of San Jose, on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

“Our family is grieving our dearest Monica Ibarra, age 52, who passed away tragically on September 8 … after being struck by a hit-and-run truck,” the victim’s family wrote on GoFundMe.

Ibarra is survived by her husband, mother, father, brother, and “her loyal dog, Anna Banana,” the family wrote. The GoFundMe page is raising donations for the woman’s funeral services.

Her death marks the city’s 24th fatal collision of 2025.
