But Bells football success almost never was. When his father brought him to football practice as a kid, he wasn’t having it.
“He told me just to try something new and then I tried it and then I happened to be good at football,” Bells said. “I’m glad I did. It was just God’s plan from there.”
Bells is good at football, but this offseason the focus was on getting better.
“This man showed up with no socks, a pink bonnet, but he came to work the whole 45 minutes that we were working together. He came to work,” running back coach TJ Cole said.
The physical work was just part of it, with the mental piece being just as important in his offseason upgrades.
“Starting to slow myself down because usually when I used to get the ball speed myself up and just instead of taking my time and really just letting the blocks develop and all that sort of stuff,” Bells said.
“He’s definitely evolved his overall game of like the biggest thing we’ve been focusing on is just his tempo and how he approaches the game when he’s running the ball,” Cole said. “I always tell him the defense has to play at your speed, we never play at the defensive speed.”
Bells’s improved patience and trust in his offensive line has upped his level of game.
“It really helps me see what the linebackers behind the defensive line doing and just watching all the blocks develop and just seeing the cut and getting in and out of there,” Bells said. “Every time I touch the ball, it’s a hole, it’s a hole, they pancaking people and just I’m just so glad I have o-line like that,” Bells said.
“I think he’s wiser. I think understanding that, the game’s gonna come to him. He doesn’t have to hope for a certain amount of carries or hope for this or that, which all of us are human and selfishly, I think we do that,” head coach Josh Gibson said. ” Right now he has an I don’t care, team first attitude right now and it’s just crazy that I feel like he’s also playing his best ball.”
But its not just the o-line Bells has to thank.
“It’s some stuff my dad and my mom and did just so I could play football that I never know about and I just wanna say thank you and thank you to all my family and support system. And also these amazing coaches I got here,” Bells said.
Even if he has a target on one of their backs…
“I really want to break Coach TJ’s touchdown record,” Bells said.
“I feel like it’s possible. My touchdown record’s been here since 2018. It’s 25 rushing touchdowns, and I think he’s very capable,” Cole said. “Super okay with it. Especially if it’s him.”
Bells next opportunity to work towards that record comes on Thursday, September 11 at Daingerfield.
