ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police are dispelling rumors of a “serial killer” on the loose on the city’s West Side on Friday night.

At 1:37 a.m. Saturday, police issued a statement on Facebook, saying, “The Rockford Police Department has been made aware of recent rumors circulating on social media regarding a ‘serial killer’ on the west side of Rockford. That information is inaccurate.”

Social media posts circulating Friday night claimed that there was a “serial killer on the loose” in the neighborhood behind the Auburn Manor apartments, and residents reported seeing police activity on Arthur Avenue, Shelly Drive, and Day Streets.

Police responded Friday, saying, “There is currently no evidence or investigation indicating the presence of a serial killer in Rockford. We encourage the public to rely on verified updates from law enforcement and verified news sources.”

On Saturday morning, police added, “The police presence recently observed in the area was related to a domestic incident and is not connected to any ongoing or broader threat.”
