According to Chicago police, the incident unfolded just before 11:30 a.m. near 57th Street Beach in the 5700 block of South DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Woodlawn.
While it is unclear exactly what led to the incident, officers said the female infant was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after divers pulled her from the water.
Rescue attempts included multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard.
“They brought her in, and they came up on the dock to put her on the stretcher. Her little hands were so stiff,” one witness told WGN-TV.
“She was purple and the foam was all in her nose, all over her lips, and all of the women just hollered,” said another witness.
WGN-TV has recently learned that first responders recovered a second body in nearby waters, adding to the devastation felt by witnesses.
A 31-year-old woman was pulled out of the water this afternoon near 63rd Street. She did not survive.
It is unclear at this whether the two incidents are related. Detectives are now conducting a death investigation, and autopsy results are pending.
