BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Sen. Bill Cassidy is seeking support from U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to address Louisiana’s increase in whooping cough cases.

Cassidy, who is running for reelection, wrote in a letter that Louisiana is amidst the worst whooping cough outbreak in 35 years, citing the death of two babies from the contagious illness and CDC data reporting 368 total cases. He wants Kennedy to support the whooping cough vaccine as he did for Texas’s measles outbreak.

“I want to work together to stop pertussis. Your strong public support for this vaccine will save lives,” Cassidy said. “Families responded to your decisive leadership when you clearly promoted the MMR vaccine to stop the outbreak in West Texas. They would respond again to your call that the DTaP vaccine is the best way to protect our babies.”

According to Cassidy, 75% who were hospitalized in Louisiana were unvaccinated or weren’t up to date on their vaccinations.
