New law pushes to protect children from online predators

ATLANTA (WJBF) – There’s a renewed push to crack down on online sexual predators and keep kids safe on the internet.

U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff’s new law, the REPORT Act, has already made a major impact. In just the first six months of this year, cyber tip reports of child sex trafficking increased 952 percent under the law.

The measure requires websites and social media platforms to report crimes involving child sex trafficking and the online enticement of children to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Companies that fail to report such crimes will now face tougher penalties.

Ossoff said protecting children online is deeply personal.

“I have a 3-year-old daughter and a 4-month-old daughter,” he said. “I know for every parent in Georgia the worst nightmare is your child being trafficked, your child being approached by a predator online. It happens every single day across the country.”

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says it has also seen a 77 percent increase in cyber tips related to online enticement of children for sexual exploitation during the first half of 2024.
