MARSHALL, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — The Marshall Lions Club is partnering with the Marshall Independent School District to conduct vision screenings for students on September 17 at Price T. Young Fine Arts Academy.

Last year, the Marshall Lions Club partnered with members from Big Sandy, Gilmer, Longview, and Tyler to conduct 496 vision screenings.

Three Marshall Lions are Texas Certified Vision Screeners, and more plan to be certified to provide more screenings.

Vision is one of the global causes of Lions Club International (LCI). In 1925, Helen Keller prompted the Lions to serve as ‘Knights of the Blind.’ Vision has been a core tenet of the group ever since.

In 1990, LCI introduced SightFirst. The program assists the blind and visually impaired and fights the major causes of preventable blindness.

The Lions Club is the largest service club organization in the world, with over 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries.
