INDIANAPOLIS — Officers working patrol for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will soon work longer hours after a recent proposal was approved.

Active members of IMPD voted Thursday night and approved a new proposal that changes officer shift length from 8.5 hours to 10 hours.

“This is a result of the city’s labor agreement with the FOP, officer feedback, and the diligent efforts of the 10-hour shift committee,” Chief Chris Bailey said in a statement. “IMPD is committed to making this a success.”

Bailey went on to say that the change is an opportunity to improve how officers “serve the community” and how the department supports its officers. While many details have yet to be confirmed regarding logistics, Bailey hinted that the change may go into effect in 2026.

“Next year will serve as a test period,” Bailey said. “This will give us the chance to evaluate whether the schedule works for our officers, the department, and the community.”

Bailey went on to say that, toward the end of next year, members will get to vote again and determine whether to make the schedule changes permanent.

“In the meantime, IMPD leadership is working through the logistics of this transition,” Bailey said. “Once those details are finalized, we will share them with both our officers and the community.”

FOX59/CBS4 has reached out to the local Fraternal Order of Police as well as IMPD officials for more details regarding the shift changes.
