Kirk, 31, was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University’s campus Wednesday. Two people had been detained but were released after authorities determined that neither was connected to the shooting. As of Thursday morning, authorities believe that the shooter blended in on campus and reported that a rifle was recovered.
Landry’s executive order stated that Kirk had visited the state several times and had a visit to LSU scheduled for Oct. 27. He asked that residents join him and First Lady Sharon Landry in prayer for Kirk’s family, friends and students involved in Turning Point USA chapters.
“I request that in the coming days and weeks, if you want to honor Charlie Kirk, that you fly an American flag and be willing to stand up for the values that make our country great, with respect and dignity shown by Charlie,” Landry said.
Read the statement Landry issued Wednesday afternoon.
“Sharon and I join the world in praying for Erika, their two children, and the entire Turning Point USA family.
“It is important to recognize that the very idea of a representative republic is to allow for the free exchange of ideas that can be debated in a peaceful setting, so that we don’t have to fight it out in the street.
“Charlie Kirk believed in that. He was a steadfast Christian, a beloved husband and father, and Patriot in every sense of the word. He stood for the principles that made this Country great: liberty, freedom, and prosperity, which are all of the things that the Left hates.
“If you want to honor Charlie Kirk, fly an American flag today. You stand up for those shared principles and you never ever back down.”
