On Wednesday, hours after his death, Assemblymember Alexandra Macedo spoke out against the violence, stating that it left her “absolutely devastated.”
“I was absolutely devastated. This hits very close to home. He was just an extremely personable person,” she said. “I felt like I knew him forever, but he was just so supportive of young people and inspiring.”
Macedo points out that Kirk was shot while exercising his First Amendment rights at a university, a space historically known for promoting free discourse.
“He’s a father. He’s a husband. He’s not going home tonight simply for trying to have conversations with people that disagree, simply for stating his political beliefs on college campuses,” Macedo said. “Not even in state houses, not in the White House, on college campuses.”
“Every American should come together and denounce any political violence,” she said. “How many more people have to lose their lives before we actually come together and say enough?”
