The St. Paul Police Department said a 16-year-old student is in custody after reportedly trying to run from the school while in possession of a gun.
Officers said at 12:27 p.m. Tuesday, police were contacted by Como Park Senior High staff who said they believed one of their students had a handgun.
While the student was being escorted to the office to be searched by staff, the student reportedly ran out of the building.
Police said officers arrived at the school and conducted a search for the student, and later found and arrested the teenager off school property.
A search of the yard where the teenager was found turned up a handgun, as well as a loaded magazine.
“I understand this news can be extremely upsetting, especially during the first weeks of school,” Dr. Diana Brown, principal of Como Park Senior High School, said in a statement shared with families. “There are serious consequences for students who bring weapons to school. We will follow our discipline procedures as outlined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.”
The teen is currently being held at a juvenile detention center for possession of a firearm by an ineligible person and possession of a firearm by an ineligible person on school property.
