On Tuesday, Rockford Scanner operator Rickie Traeger was arrested after a hit-and-run that appeared to be motivated by a road-rage incident. A woman was injured in the crash.
While many road rage incidents are minor, some can escalate to serious altercations, potentially leading to jail time or worse. This has made curbing road rage a priority for local law enforcement.
“It’s very sad that people don’t have the general respect for each other,” said Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana, highlighting the lack of civility among drivers.
Social worker Kevin Polky noted a trend in road rage incidents, suggesting that a sense of anonymity and lack of accountability in the digital age might contribute to this behavior.
“In the last 10 to 15 years, with the digital world that we’re in is there’s there’s sometimes a sense of anonymity, there’s no accountability,” Polky said. “I think that also happens, in some cases of road rage, that there’s this almost this sense that I won’t be held accountable.”
Sheriff Caruana explained that road rage often occurs when drivers attempt to correct perceived wrongs on the road, which can lead to confrontations and legal consequences.
According to a Pew Research Center survey, about half of Americans believe that people are driving more dangerously now than before the pandemic.
Polky emphasized the importance of perspective, advising drivers to remain calm.
“We don’t know who that person is that you may be directing that anger at. We don’t know, you know, could they respond in violence as well,” he said.
Sheriff Caruana advised that if a driver feels threatened or believes a crime has occurred, they should drive to a safe, well-lit area and contact 911.
“I’ve seen this when you just stay calm, and it’s not that big of a deal, it goes away the more we do and take responsibility for ourselves, because that’s the only situation that we can do, is take responsibility for ourselves. We can calm it down,” Caruana said.
