Kansas Museum of History re-opening after three years of renovations

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas History Museum showcased its progress to the public during a years-long renovation process. 27 News found out what visitors can expect.

The renovation of the museum includes updating records and pictures and remodeling the lobby. The museum will also now be set up thematically instead of chronologically, which will make for the most interactive experience.

Visitors will be able to explore four different galleries, all explaining the history of Kansas.

“When visitors walk in, they’re going to be introduced with a question: ‘What is Kansas?” When you are able to tell a story, tell history through themes, you can better bring history up to today,” Kansas Museum of History Director, Sarah Bell said. “And so, the relevance of history really resonates in ways that may or may not do as well when you have to go all the way through time before you see how it impacts us today.”

The Kansas Historical Society raised more than six million dollars to complete the renovations, which were expected to finish last year. Delays pushed the timeline back to January of this year, and further delays pushed the opening date back even further.

The museum will finally be open to the public on November 22.
