Belle Plain, Texas: From Callahan County seat to ghost town

CALLAHAN COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – Tucked away in rural Callahan County, the quiet remnants of Belle Plain, Texas, tell the story of a once-thriving frontier town that has nearly faded from existence.

Today, only a lonely cemetery and a few scattered ruins remain, serving as a testament to a community that once held the title of county seat. Once bustling with promise, Belle Plain has long since slipped into obscurity, slowly reclaimed by nature.

KTAB/KRBC interviewed Lee Abernathy, a man who grew up in the area decades after its peak, to reflect on what once existed and what little remains.

“I lived at Belle Plain when I was seven. I’m 80 now… And when I was a Cub Scout, we used to go out there on field visits and that kind of thing… Last time I was there, the mesquite trees had grown up so that you actually could drive on the road and not even know it was there,” Abernathy said.

Belle Plain was founded in 1876, although families had begun settling in the area much earlier. Within two years, local officials designated Belle Plain as the seat of Callahan County, leading to the town’s continued growth. A jail was constructed, but it was later moved to Baird, where it remains today. In 1881, Belle Plain College was established, likely becoming the town’s most enduring institution.

The college housed the largest music conservatory between Fort Worth and El Paso, featuring more than 20 grand pianos on the second floor. In addition to its music program, the college also had a marching band and a military training program. This aspect of campus life was sensitive, coming just 10 to 15 years after the end of the Civil War. The Belle Plain students wore gray uniforms, reflecting Confederate traditions.

While residents retained high spirits, talk of moving the county seat had been circulating for some time.

“The T&P [Railway Company] had already decided that Baird would be established as the division point for the railroad,” said Abernathy.

A local newspaper that had been established in Belle Plain was reporting on local sentiment at the time. Abernathy recalled the general idea of the public as being, “Baird’s never gonna be anything; don’t pay any attention to this. Belle Plain is the county seat. This is where we’re gonna be.” Abernathy went on to recount the developments of that same newspaper proprietor just two years later: “The newspaper, which had been the great rouser of Belle Plain, gets a chance to move to Baird, and he packs up his press and goes. That basically says, ‘we know where things are gonna be.'”

When the state established counties, Abernathy noted that the county seat was typically located at the geographic center of most square counties. Although Belle Plain occupies this central location, similar to Buffalo Gap and Abilene, the final decision about the county seat was ultimately determined by the Railway Company.

“I’ve heard at least one person say. The clanging of the bell from the train that went through Baird for the first time was the death knell for Belle Plain,” Abernathy said

By 1883, Baird was officially recognized as the Callahan County seat. Abernathy says Belle Plain hung on for a little while longer, but the population continued to decline, with mainly farmers and ranchers remaining. In 1905, the Belle Plain Post Office closed its doors, marking the official end of the incorporated area after about three decades.

The Belle Plain Cemetery is the only remaining site that continues to receive regular maintenance. While the Belle Plain Cemetery Association cares for the final resting place of all former residents, Abernathy noted that it is becoming increasingly challenging to secure the funds and labor required for proper upkeep. She encourages anyone with a passion for historical preservation to explore ways to support the cemetery.
