Girls check out planes during aviation day event at Topeka’s Combat Air Museum

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Local Girl Scouts headed to the Combat Air Museum south of Topeka to learn more about women’s empowerment in aviation last weekend.

Girl Scouts spent this year’s Girls in Aviation Day event at the museum on Saturday, Sept. 6 meeting with women pilots and looking inside several planes. Women in Aviation International got the ball rolling on this event back in 2016 and now it has become an annual tradition.

Director of the Combat Air Museum, Kevin Drewelow, told 27 News that girls are just as qualified to take to the skies as boys are. He encourages girls to check out the aviation field to see if it is something they’d enjoy.

“Just to know there is a place for women in aviation,” Drewelow said. “Girls can do anything boys can do with a flying machine. They should look into this to see if it is something they enjoy.”

Girl Scouts also went to the Museum of the Kansas National Guard as part of the event. You can find the Combat Air Museum at 7016 Southeast Forbes Avenue and can visit its website by clicking here.
