Construction scheduled for TRAX lines this fall, UTA says

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) has announced maintenance projects for TRAX Red and Blue light rail lines this fall.

Work on the rail lines will take place between Sept. and Oct., according to UTA. In addition to service delays, drivers and pedestrians can expect temporary changes related to traffic in the project areas. Drivers can expect altered traffic patterns in work zones, including lane shifts and closures.

“UTA’s fall 2025 construction focuses on system improvements, including infrastructure maintenance and replacement of hardware for TRAX light rail, some of which has been in place for 25 years,” a press release from UTA says. “The critical updates will enhance ride quality and safety, upgrade the road-to-rail interface, extend the life of existing equipment and improve accessibility accommodations. The projects are part of UTA’s TRAX Forward program to modernize the existing system and make improvements that will allow for future expansion.”

These projects are reportedly sequenced to minimize service disruptions as much as possible, UTA said. When TRAX service is unavailable, UTA will transport passengers by a planned “bus bridge” between light rail stations.

The fall 2025 construction schedule is as follows, provided by UTA:

• Sept. 10-17: 9000 South grade crossing maintenance:
  • TRAX Blue Line will terminate at Midvale Center Station (southbound) and Sandy Civic Center Station (northbound). 
  • A bus bridge will be in place between Midvale Center and Sandy Civic Center stations. 
  • Plan for delays of up to 30 minutes, depending on your starting and ending stations. 
  • On Sept. 13, all traffic lanes on 9000 South will be open by 2 p.m. to accommodate event traffic at America First Field. Eastbound lanes will close by 11 p.m. Westbound lanes will remain open. 
  • Regular TRAX service will resume on Thursday, Sept. 18. 

• Oct. 6-9: Central Avenue grade crossing maintenance:
  • TRAX Blue and Red Lines will terminate at Meadowbrook Station (southbound) and Murray Central Station (northbound). 
  • A bus bridge will be in place between Meadowbrook and Murray Central stations. 
  • Plan for delays of up to 30 minutes, depending on your starting and ending stations. 
  • Regular TRAX service will resume on Friday, Oct. 10.

Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather, material, and utility delays, UTA said.
