Baton Rouge woman charged with 4th DUI after vehicle crashes into ditch

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The Louisiana Department of Public Safety responded to a vehicle in a ditch around 11 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4.

The investigation led to the arrest of a Baton Rouge woman.

Catrina Nelson, 42, was charged with fourth-offense driving under the influence of alcohol, careless operation, driving with a suspended license, and having an open container.

The responding officer found the vehicle with the engine still running at the intersection of Chippewa Street and Jessamine Avenue.

The driver’s side door was open and the driver was not awake. The driver was later identified as Nelson.

She exited the vehicle upon request and was found to have bloodshot, glassy eyes, a lack of balance, and slurred speech, according to the affidavit.

It was determined that Nelson was driving with a suspended license. Law enforcement said she did not perform well when asked to complete standardized field sobriety tests.

A search of her vehicle was conducted following her arrest. The officer found a cup with wine in it and an open wine bottle.

A breath test showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.144, above the legal limit of 0.08.

Nelson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Friday, Sept. 5.
