Garner family of 3 lose home to fire on Plaza Drive that left 1 person injured, officials say

GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) — Fire officials are currently investigating what started a fire at a home Saturday morning in Garner that left one person injured and a family without their home.

According to the Garner Fire & Rescue Department, crews responded to the call of the fire around 6:25 a.m. on the 200 block of Plaza Drive.

The first responding units said they saw flames shooting through the roof upon arrival. According to a spokesperson of the fire department, it took 30 firefighters from Garner and mutual aid units nearby to knock down the blaze.

The spokesperson said 3 people were displaced — a woman, her son and her brother — as a result of the fire.

An elderly woman, homeowner Louise Sanders, had to rescue her 83-year-old brother from the blaze. “I thank God I was able to get my brother out,” said Sanders. “He’s 83 years old and got dementia. He was standing in the smoke talking about ‘I got to get my clothes, get my clothes,’ and I just put him out the room and brought him down the hallway.”

CBS 17 was on the scene where multiple fire truck engines were on Plaza Drive after just putting out the house fire. The hose was still attached to the fire hydrant and firefighters were leaving the home with axes and tools in hand.

Sander’s brother was seen on a stretcher in front of the home. The spokesperson said he was being taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The spokesperson said the Red Cross is assisting the family who lost their home.

Fire officials are still actively investigating the cause of the fire.
