Is your water tasting ‘earthy’? The City of Clovis has answers

CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Clovis residents may have noticed their water tasting different, but the city says it’s “natural.”

During hot, dry weather conditions, the city says residents may notice an “earthy” odor or taste in their water. The culprit? Geosmin, a harmless, naturally occurring compound.

While the odor or taste can be unpleasant, the city says geosmin is not harmful.

Although the seasonal shift will resolve many of the conditions leading to geosmin, the city says it is taking steps to help lessen its presence.
