Nursing center on break-in: ‘swift and courageous actions of staff prevented more serious outcome’

KIS LYN – A Luzerne County nursing center police say was broken into by a naked man commended their staff’s bravery Tuesday in confronting and barricading the intruder.

Butler Township (Luzerne County) Police said a naked man broke into the Frtizingertown Senior Living Community late Sunday night.

“Our first and most important concern is always the welfare of our residents,” said Paula Hahn, Executive Director. “We are deeply grateful to our staff for their quick action and courage in the face of this frightening situation, and for the prompt response of our local and state police and first responders.”

The nursing center said that “the swift and courageous actions of the staff ensured the safety of residents and prevented a more serious outcome.”

The man, Zane Brobst, 35, of Drums, was charged with felony counts of burglary, aggravated assault, and criminal trespass.

The center said he kicked in locked doors to gain entry and assaulted two independent living residents.

“Demonstrating both bravery and training, staff were able to lure and barricade the suspect into a laundry room until police and emergency responders arrived and removed the individual without further incident,” the center said in a statement.

“We commend our team for following their training and ensuring that this horrifying event ended without a worse outcome.,” said Hahn.

This was a first in more than 40 years of operation at the center, they said, and Butler Township Police have been asked to surveil the property in the coming weeks. A private security company has been hired for nighttime patrols and a social worker is available for counseling and support for residents and staff.

Brobst remains in Luzerne County Prison. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 25.
