MCCSC Highlights Academic Opportunities, Evidence-Based Student Support

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) detailed its wide range of academic programs and student support initiatives during a recent school board meeting, underscoring opportunities that span from early learning to advanced college preparation.

At the Aug. 26 Board of School Trustees meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Alexis Harmon presented updates on MCCSC’s offerings. These include five schools certified in STEM by the Indiana Department of Education, three International Baccalaureate World Schools, the Hoosier Hills Career Center, and the Academy of Science and Entrepreneurship, which is an Early College Certified School. Fairview Elementary School is also home to a Performing Arts Academy.

Students have access to 26 career and college pathways, more than 300 extracurricular activities, and a broad slate of programs in science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Those opportunities range from robotics and makerspaces to elementary strings and band programs, as well as visual arts courses such as ceramics, jewelry, and stained glass.

High school students can pursue 34 Advanced Placement courses, 41 dual credit classes, and the Indiana College Core, a block of 30 credit hours transferable to public colleges statewide. “Our students are immersed in experiences that help them prepare for their futures, whether that’s in college, careers, or the arts,” Harmon said.

Harmon emphasized that MCCSC’s approach to student success also relies on evidence-based practices that support academics, behavior, and social-emotional development. Schools use data and progress monitoring to shape instruction and identify individual student needs.

MCCSC students continue to perform above state averages. The district reported strong 2024–25 IREAD results, ILEARN scores above state benchmarks, and 11th grade SAT scores among the highest in Indiana. In 2024, the corporation’s graduation rate reached 95.6%, compared to 90% statewide and 58% among Indiana charter schools.

“We really have 10,000 reasons to be the best that we can be every day,” Harmon said, referring to the district’s enrollment.
