80-year-old killed in Monroe house fire

MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — An 80-year-old was killed in a Monroe house fire Wednesday night, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 6 p.m., along with Union EMS, Stack Road Volunteer Fire Department, Lanes Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and Sandy Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, to the 500 block of Walters Mill Road in Monroe after receiving reports of a home fully engulfed in flames.

First responders arrived on scene shortly after the calls were received and confirmed that the residence was completely involved. At the time, it was unknown if the home was occupied.

Once the fire was extinguished, it was discovered that the 80-year-old homeowner had died inside the residence.

The investigation remains ongoing, though preliminary findings do not indicate foul play.

Out of respect for the family and due to the ongoing investigation, the victim’s name will not be released at this time.
