PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley, who just returned from the Middle East, is calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the return of Israeli hostages.

Merkley was joined by Senator Chris Van Holland (D-Maryland). The two lawmakers visited the West Bank, Jordan, and Egypt.

They weren’t allowed into Gaza, but they did go to the border, where they say the humanitarian crisis is worsening.

They are pressing the Israelis to allow more food and medicine into the region, as Israeli bombs have reduced many communities in Gaza to rubble.

“Food deprivation, destruction of homes, really are part of a larger vision pushed by some right-wing members of the Israeli cabinet,” Merkley said. “And those members want to see essentially to drive most Palestinians out of Gaza.”

Merkley was a dissenting vote to send more offensive weapons to Israel, although he is in favor of continuing defensive military aid, such as the Iron Dome.
