Gov. Jeff Landry says new Angola facility will house ‘worst of the worst’ ICE detainees

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced the opening of a new facility called Camp 47 that will house the “worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens arrested by ICE” during a news conference at Angola Prison on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Landry was joined by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan.

“We are here to protect our state and our country,” said Landry. “This facility is designed to hold the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens.”

Landry mentioned that the country’s open border policy “left America in shambles.”

“While it is true that America is a country of immigrants but it is also a country of laws,” he said. “The Democrats’ open border policy has allowed the illegal entry of violent criminals, including rapists, child predators, human traffickers, and drug dealers, who have left a path of destruction and death throughout America.”

The governor also commended President Donald Trump for the courage to stand up to the violence of the nation.

“Until the election of President Trump, no one at the federal level had the courage to stand up to the violence that has gripped this nation, and I mean no one,” he said. “What we are announcing today is not the panacea to our crime problem, but it is part and parcel of the solution. This facility is fulfilling the president’s promise to make America safe again.”

The facility is expected to house over 200 criminals by mid-September, with 51 being housed at the time of this publication, and the capacity to hold 400 criminals within the next few months.

Noem referenced a few of the inmates who are currently housed at the new facility, including a 39-year-old murderer from Mexico, a 70-year-old Cuban man accused of rape with a weapon, a 55-year-old man from Cuba accused of aggravated rape, and a 22-year-old man from Honduras convicted on 394 counts of child pornography stemming from outstanding warrants.

“President Trump and I are committed,” said Noem. “We are committed to making America safe again, and that means arresting as many illegal criminal aliens as possible and making sure we’re getting them off of our streets. We’re bringing them to justice and making our community safer.”

Noem added that Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” provided funding for thousands of detention facilities across the country.

U.S. AG Bondi reassured the community of the plan to protect the border.

“We are working to secure our border, remove dangerous illegal aliens, stop drug and human smuggling, and lock up these criminals as long as we can in our prisons,” said Bondi. “Louisiana, you’re going to be an example for the rest of this country.”

Bondi said the U.S. Attorney General’s Office, Louisiana law enforcement, and other federal agencies are working on a joint effort to “disrupt the illegal, criminal, drug organizations” here in Louisiana. She shared that over a three-week span, authorities were able to arrest 140 violent criminals, seize over 100 firearms, seize $250,000, and drugs such as fentanyl and cocaine off the streets.

“Nearly 100 defendants were charged with illegal immigration offenses,” said Bondi. “And now, we have a place to house them all.”

Leaders’ statements on the new facility

“Thanks to investments provided by the Big Beautiful Bill, the Angola prison located in my district will now hold some of the most violent, criminal illegal immigrants. I share President Trump’s priority of securing the border and increasing public safety,” said Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Letlow.
