SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The case of a missing man from a small town in eastern Utah remains unsolved 40 years later.

On Sept. 2, 1985, Fred Richard Davis, 31, went missing according to the Utah Department of Public Safety. He was last seen in a small town near Vernal.

Questions surrounding his disappearance remain unanswered after four decades.

A routine hunting trip gone wrong

Davis was supposed to meet family for a hunting trip in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, but never arrived, according to the Doe Network, a missing persons database. His family quickly filed a missing persons case with the Naples Police Department.

About two weeks later, on Sept. 19, police found Davis’s beige pickup truck in the parking lot of the Dunes Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Records indicate the truck was found unlocked, with the windows down and the keys inside.

Identifying characteristics

According to the Doe Network, Davis was last seen wearing “western items” including a western-style belt and blue jeans. He is listed as being just under six feet tall and about 160 pounds with brown shoulder length hair and a thick mustache.

After seven years or more, a person is presumed dead according to the Social Security Administration. There is no record of Davis ever being found.

Davis would be 71 were he found alive today.

Police say anyone with information about Davis’s disappearance can contact the Naples Police Department at 435-789-9449.
