Nugene Eackels, 49, of Baton Rouge, was charged with second-degree murder.
BRPD officers responded to Byron Avenue just before 6:30 a.m. Aug. 3, where they found that Johnson had been shot. While investigating, police learned Johnson was shot once in the head. The shooting victim died later at a hospital.
Police were able to get surveillance video from multiple homes in the 3200 block of Byron Avenue. Authorities discovered that the shooting happened around 6:20 a.m.
Video showed Eackels and Johnson get into an altercation before the shooting, according to BRPD. Eackels is then seen going in and out of the home. When outside, Eackles is observed on the phone beside Johnson.
At the shooting scene, officers contacted the person who called police and identified himself as “Teddy Sims.” BRPD determined that the caller gave a fake name. Police later identified the caller as Eackels. Authorities were able to match the language from the 911 call to the language heard on the officer’s body camera recording, verifying that Eackels was the caller.
Eackels was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Friday, Aug. 29.
